WHAT MAKES THE 21st CENTURY DIFFERENT ?

We are now living in an era which is strikingly different from the earlier centuries. What we used to achieve in centuries, we are in now in a position to achieve in decades and what we could achieve in decades, we are in a position to achieve in less than a year.
The innovations like 'Electricity' and 'Internet' have been at the root of most of the progress the mankind has made and the tremendous boost in the productivity levels. The revolution in the telecommunication area has made, what was considered to be the staple diet for fiction writers, turn into reality. Robotics, Networking, Cloud computing, Telepresence, Extreme Mobility solutions, Individualized customer targeting, Unforeseen Customer Experience Focused capabilities, GIS, Big Data, Exploration of the universe and search for alternate locations for habitations etc are but few of the numerous innovations and discoveries that are being made and facilitated.
In the past decade, it was possible to get a hang on the innovations, inventions and discoveries as they used to few and far between. The pace at which the world is progressing today, it is not possible to even geniuses to go to depth of even a small percentage of the inventions that are shaking the world every day, despite the unlimited power and productivity, search engines like 'Google' have placed in our hand.

The route at all this is the unleashing of the power of the individual with the abilities conferred upon him by the power of automation, internet, networking and the collective learning of the past, till the very past moment  is enabling this continuous and relentless push on the existing barriers. It is indeed worthy to repeat one of the greatest quotes of all times: "Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world. ”  Archimedes
We are having enough levers with us now and it is dependent on us how we use them and on what firm grounds, we place them.
Some of the trends we need to be conscious of:
Movement from individualized approach to team based approach and now, groups of teams networked globally and collaborating together,
Movement from a one size fits all approach/ batch processing, to more sizes for every individual,
Working in silos to collaborating with customers, competitors and the external environment,
Profligacy and generous spends to extremely focused and output linked spends,
Diversification and working on a broad area to extremely focused area with razor focus,
A few transactions with a customer to focus on life long engagement with his/her network and lifetime value
Brute work to smart work, Idea creators to Idea catalysts for the entire enterprise,
Burn rates to Value creation and Value capture rates, Family Managed to Professional and Organized approach, Focus on company value creation to overall value creation that will have a ripple affect on company's growth as well, 'I do everything' approach to 'Outsource to an expert', 'Solution Selling' to 'Solution Discovery and Insight Selling' and above all, a 'I Know all' approach to a continuous learning and evolution approach.
While we are empowered with new tools and are chasing new frontiers, it is important that we do not unlearn the good things from the past and be unmindful of the basics of sound and ethical businesses.
The speed of progress of creation of the tallest buildings should never undermine the importance of a strong foundation. Hence it is important to have a clear Vision, Mission, Strategic, Ethical and Value driven approach with focus of the triple bottom line of 'Planet', 'People' and 'Profits'. Any business that takes care of the society along with its focus on its bottomline has a strong chance for continuing to grow strongly for generations.
Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Lary Ellison, Sunil Bharti Mittal, George Soros, Li Ka-shing, Late Steve Jobs (a lot of work  anonymously), Oprah Winfrey, Azim Premji have been a few of the greatest business persons of all time who stand firmly by the world, sharing the wealth they are creating for the progress of mankind and the humanity. They are great role models that we can have from whom, we can learn how to build sustainable, great organizations of the 21st century.
